  Hyderabad

Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, along with its twin city Secunderabad has over 400 years of history. Hyderabad is a heady mixture of heritage, traditionally hospitality and a booming software industry. It is the fifth largest city in India and has a population of over 2.2 million. It has a Hindu - Muslim culture with a number of monuments of historical importance.

  Charminar

The principal landmark in Hyderabad is Charminar, built in 1591 to commemorate the end of a plague epidemic. The Charminar is a structure of four columns with corner minarets and a small Hindu shrine. Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah built the structure after he had shifted his capital from Golkonda.

Each side of the Charminar opens into a plaza through giant arches.

  Mecca Masjid

Just 100 yards South West of Charminar is the Mecca Masjid, the largest mosque of South India.

The constructions of this mosque was started by Sultan Muhammad Qutub Shah in 1617, the work continued during the reign of Abdullah Qutub Shah and Abul Hassan Tana Shah and was completed in 1694 by the Moghal Emperor Aurangzeb. The mosque is one of the largest in the country and can accommodate ten thousand people at a time during the prayer.

The hall is 67 metres long, 54 metres wide and 23 metres high. The roof is supported by 15 arches, 5 on each of the three sides. The colonnades and entrance arches are made of a single slab of granite.

  Salar Jung Museum

The collection housed in Salar Jung Museum is said to be the largest single collection of antiques in the world. The 35,000 piece collection was assembled by Mir Yusaf Ali Khan, Salar Jung III.

Salar Jung Museum features exhibits from all over the world including European paintings and sculpture, most famously the "Veiled Rebecca" by Italian sculptor Giovanni Maria Benzoni, as well as Chinese and Japanese pieces. Other items of note are textiles, swords, glass, Indian miniatures, jade, ivory, devotional objects, illuminated manuscripts and over 50,000 books.

The collections include Indian Art, Middle Eastern Art, Far Eastern Art, European Art, Children Art along with a Founders gallery and a rare manuscript section. Indian Art includes stone sculptures, bronze images, jade carvings, painted textiles, wood carvings, miniature paintings, modern art, ivory carvings, textiles, metal-ware, manuscript, arms & armour etc. Middle Eastern Art contains the collection of carpets, paper (manuscripts), glass, metal-ware, furniture, lacquer etc. from Persia, Arabia, Syria, and Egypt. Collection of Far Eastern Art exhibit porcelain, bronze, enamel, lacquerware, embroidery, painting, wood & inlay work from China, Japan, Tibet, Nepal and Thailand etc. Oil and watercolor paintings form an important part of the European Collection.

  Golconda Fort

Portions of the Golconda Fort date from the 13th Century. Although much of the fort is in ruins, the outer walls have semi circular bastions and some are still mounted with cannons. Golconda Fort also features eight gateways, four drawbridges, numerous royal apartments and halls, temples, mosques, magazines, and stables.

This immense fortress was built on a granite hill, surrounded by ramparts of large masonry blocks. The main gates were studded with iron spikes as a way of obstructing war elephants from entering.

  Laad Bazaar

The renowned Laad Bazaar is a shopper's paradise famous for everything from perfumes, fabrics, jewelry, and musical instruments to household items. Visitors to the Laad Bazaar can watch artists at work as they create bidri (inlaid silverware), large pots and musical instruments.

A vast array of stores in Laad Bazaar sell bangles, saris, wedding clothes and items that are targeted to women. Some of the shops form the center of India's pearl trade, cultured pearls are graded and strung out for shoppers to view.

  Ramoji Film City

Ramoji Film City is both a tourist attraction and major film-making facility. Film City has a variety of movie sets laid out on over 2,000 acres of land with hills and lakes. Filmmakers enjoy the options that Film City offers from the 50 studio floors, outdoor locations and wealth of technology.

Tourists can enjoy a guided tour of this vast complex that include exotic gardens, outdoor sets, studio floors, technology labs, a digital film facility, hospitality centers, props and period costumes, a variety of equipment and gadgetry for the film-maker.

  Lumbini Park

Lumbini Park is located adjacent to the Hussain Sagar Lake.
A colorful Floral Clock, man-made waterfalls and musical fountains are among the key attractions of the Park. The spectacular musical dancing fountain and water cascades attract huge crowds. During summer time normally three shows are organized. Every day there is a musical fountain show at 6.30 pm.

  Falaknuma Palace

Falaknuma Palace is located 5 kilometers due south of Charminar. The palace is located on a 2000-foot-high hill. Nawab Vikar-ul-Umra built this palace and Nizam VI purchased this palace from Nawab Vikar-ul-Umra in 1897. The latter used this palace as a royal guest house.

With lavishly decorated interiors and built by an Italian architect, this palace stands as a witness to the late nineteenth century architectural taste of Hyderabad. The palace is modeled like a scorpion. The palace has as many as 220 lavishly designed rooms as well as 22 halls

  Birla Mandir

An enchanting modern Birla Mandir located in south end of Hussain Sagar in Hyderabad, stands atop the Kala Pahad, the twin hillock of the Naubat Pahad. The Birlas (industrialists who have also built several temples in India in this century) built this temple in 1976. This modern enchanting temple dedicated to Lord Venkateswara (Vishnu), constructed with white marbles from Rajasthan.

Birla Mandir combines the architectural styles of Orissan and South Indian temples. A Rajagopuram built in the South Indian style greets the visitors. The tower over the main shrine of Lord Venkateswara called the "Jagadananda Vimanam" is built in the Orissan style, while the towers over the shrines of the consorts are built in the South Indian style. An exotic scenes from the great epics of Ramayana and Mahabharatha are finely sculpted in marble, the inner shrine of the temple is a replica of the Venkateswara temple at Tirupati. The brass flagstaff rises to a height of 42 feet.
